September 2011: Seven bulls sold to Beckhithe Farms, Norfolk
Once again Shadwell Estate are indebted to the wonderful partnership we have with Barry Brooks and Gary Gray at Beckhithe Farms in Norfolk. This month they have purchased seven bulls from us having had the pick of the crop of the for sale bulls. The majority of the bulls are by our past senior stock bull Muirhall Total Deal E009 and are out of some of the best cows in the herd. We hope they perform just as well as previous Shadwell bulls and look forward to hearing about how their progeny perform in the suckler herd.

September 2011: Shadwell Black Broughton K485 takes reserve championship at Royal Berkshire Show
Royal Berkshire Show at Newbury was a fitting end to a cracking show season for us this year as we took the reserve overall championship with our yearling bull Shadwell Black Broughton K485. By Muirhall Total Deal E009, this bull has previously been reserve champion at the National Show at Westmorland, reserve overall at Edenbridge and Oxted and male champion at the Royal Welsh Show. He was praised by judge Victor Wallace for being an excellent young bull with a great future ahead of him. He will now be retained as our junior herd sire.

Also taking home first prize tickets was our two year old heifer Shadwell Jury Erica J455, a daughter of Total Deal, while our show cow Shadwell Queen May D189, by past sire Shadwell Emperor A038 stood second in a tough cow and calf class. Our yearling heifer Shadwell Jury Erica K468 stood sixth place in an even tougher yearling heifer class. The Shadwell team then went on to win the best Group of Three class, owned by exhibitor.
September 2011: Shadwell take champion and reserve at Edenbridge and Oxted
It was a one-two for the Shadwell show team at Edenbridge and Oxted Show at the back end of August, as we took the championship honours under judge Donald Biggar with our cow Shadwell Queen May D189 and then took the male championship and reserve overall with our yearling bull Shadwell Black Broughton K485. Our two year old heifer Shadwell Jury Erica J455 stood third in her class, while Shadwell Jury Erica K468 stood fourth in her class.
September 2011: Shadwell Black Broughton takes junior male and reserve overall male championship at National Show
It may have rained all day at the National Aberdeen-Angus Show held at Westmorland Show, but it was certainly well worth the trip as we carried on a great show season by winning one of the junior bull classes and taking the junior male championship and then the reserve overall male championship with Shadwell Black Broughton K485. By Muirhall Total Deal E009, he is out of Shadwell Blackbird who goes back to one of our foundation cows Blackbird T22 of Blelack. We think a lot of this bull and have now retained him as a junior herd sire having also won the male championship at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.
Other members of the show team were our two year old heifer Shadwell Jury Erica J455, again a daughter of Total Deal, she stood third in a tough two year old class, while our show cow from this year, Shadwell Queen May D189 stood fourth in yet another strong cow and calf class.

July 2011: Shadwell Black Broughton wins elite performance native bull championship at Royal Welsh Show
Going further afield to the Royal Welsh Show for the first time certainly proved to be a good move for the Shadwell show team this year as we took the male championship and best animal bred by exhibitor with our yearling bull Shadwell Black Broughton K485, who is by our senior stock bull Muirhall Total Deal E009 out of Shadwell Blackbird D181. On the second day of judging Broughton was then placed elite performance native junior champion. Broughton has previously stood male champion at the Suffolk Show and is currently for sale, so please contact us if you would like to arrange a viewing.

Of the females in the show team, our show cow Shadwell Queen May D189, by Shadwell Emperor A038 stood fourth in a very tough cow class, while our two year old heifer Shadwell Jury Erica J455, again by Total Deal stood fourth, as did our yearling heifer Shadwell Jury Erica K468.

July 2011: Shadwell Queen May takes reserve native female interbreed championship at Royal Norfolk Show
It was yet another successful show for the Shadwell team at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show. Having won her class, our show cow Shadwell Queen May then went on to take the female championship and overall championship before being tapped out as reserve female native interbreed champion. She was also part of the reserve team for the Colman’s Cup as well as best exhibitor bred animal.
Also part of the team was Shadwell Jury Erica K468 who stood first, while Shadwell Jury Erica J455 was second in her class. Shadwell Black Broughton K485 also stood second in his class as well as Shadwell Jury Eric who also stood second.

June 2011: Shadwell Queen May D189 stands reserve interbreed champion at Suffolk Show
We were delighted with the success the Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus team had at this year’s Suffolk Show. Not only did we take the female and breed championship with our May 2004-born Shadwell Queen May D189 under breed judge William McLaren of the Netherton herd, we also went on to take the native interbreed championship and the reserve overall interbreed championship. Queen May is by our homebred bull Shadwell Emperor who is a Justin Eric X47 of Blelack and is out of the Westrover of Haymount daughter Shadwell Queen May who is out of Castle of Mey Queen Mother 19th.

Also in the breed classes Shadwell Jury Erica J455, our November 2009 born heifer by Muirhall Total Deal E009 out of a Shadwell Black Baroque A048 daughter won her class and also stood reserve female champion and reserve breed champion. Our February 2010 born Shadwell Jury Erica K468, another Total deal daughter also won the yearling heifer class taking her second win in three shows. And of the bulls in the team, Shadwell Black Broughton K485, another by Total Deal this time out of the Blelack Blacksmith Y291 daughter Shadwell Blackbird D181 won the yearling bull class and then went on to take the male championship. We have great hopes for this bull as when he was scanned at just under 12 months he had a massive eye muscle score of 140. He also has a TSI of +33 and a SRI of +41.

May 2011: Shadwell Queen May D189 takes reserve breed championship at Hadleigh show
The Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus show team had another successful day at Hadleigh Show recently, with Shadwell Queen May D189 picking up the reserve breed championship. This May 2004-born cow is by Shadwell Emperor and out of Shadwell Queen May, a Westrover of Haymount daughter. She was shown with her bull calf, Shadwell Quinlan Maximus L527, at foot.
Adding to the success was yearling heifer Shadwell Jury Erica K468, a Muirhall Total Deal daughter that stood second in her class.
And Shadwell Jury Erica J455 a November 2009-born heifer by Total Deal stood a creditable fourth in her class.
Then March-born bull calf Shadwell Quinlan Maximus L527 received a fourth prize himself to add to the day’s success.

May 2011: South Suffolk Show
The Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus show team had a successful start to the season at South Suffolk Show on Sunday 8th May, with a number of prizes collected in both the male and female classes. Leading the way was Shadwell Jury Erica K468, a February 2010-born daughter of Muirhall Total Deal which stood first in her class and then went on to stand reserve female champion.
Taking a second prize ticket was Shadwell Frances J451, an October 2009-born Total Deal daughter, while also collecting a second prize was homebred yearling bull Shadwell Black Broughton K485, also by Total Deal and born in April 2010. September 2010 - Shadwell takes reserve champion at Edenbridge and Oxted
Our last show of the season saw the Shadwell herd pull out the trump card in the form of senior bull Muirhall Total Deal E009. We’ve been so impressed with Total Deal’s progeny, particularly on the female side, that we felt we should bring him out for a show outing. In the senior bull class he stood second under judge Colin Hutchings from the Kingsbrompton herd in Somerset to the overall champion. He then followed through in the championship to take the reserve male and overall reserve breed championships. Total Deal is by Young Dale Real Deal 18K and is out of Young Dale Tilda 6K.
Our senior cow Shadwell Jayne Erica D165, stood second in a tough cow and calf class. This 2004-born cow is by our past herd sire Shadwell Emperor A038 and is out of the H F Richochet 99F daughter Shadwell Jayne Erica Y071.
August 2010 - Shadwell purchase noted Peter Pershore from Blelack
Shadwell Estates are delighted to announce the arrival of new herd sire, Netherallan Peter Pershore E052, for an undisclosed fee, from the Blelack herd of Messrs N F Massie and Sons, Dinnet, Aberdeenshire.
By Ankonian Elixir 100 and out of the young Dale Hogan 3Y daughter Nightingale Pride of Pershore S44, this bull has a terminal sire index of +45 and a self replacing index of +63.
Blelack have had three crops of calves from him and have retained the semen rights with semen available for sale. After his sale Neil Massie commented: “We consider his sons and daughters to be the best cattle the herd has produced to date. We have retained a top son from the 2009 crop.”
At Stirling in February 2010 the first seven sons to be sold by Peter Pershore averaged £11,850 including the intermediate and overall champion, the senior championship and all the group awards.
A yearling full sister to the overall champion won the junior class at this year`s Highland Show and the overall championship at this weeks Turriff Show. She is for sale at the Best of Blacks sale at St Boswells on the 25th September.
Richard Lancaster, the Director of Shadwell Estates said: “In Peter Pershore we have purchased fantastic bloodlines which will no doubt compliment a strong Blelack influence currently within the Shadwell herd, as well as bringing tremendous figures into the herd. We are incredibly excited about this bull’s future at Shadwell and look forward to seeing calves on the ground next year.”

June 2010: Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus at Suffolk County Show
The Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus show were back on the show circuit and attended the Suffolk County Show with a cow and calf and to yearling bulls. Our cow, Shadwell Jayne Erica, a February 2004-born daughter of Shadwell Emperor stood second in the cow and calf class. In a competitive junior bull class we took a third with Shadwell Jocham, a March 2009-born son of our senior stock bull Muirhall Total Deal and a fifth place with another Total Deal son Shadwell Jordan Eric. Our next show will be the East of England in a couple of weeks time.
May 2010: Shadwell all set for busy show season
Having had a break from showing for the last year, Shadwell Aberdeen-Angus are returning to the show circuit and will be attending the Suffolk, East of England and Royal Norfolk Shows. The show team consists of a yearling heifer by Ranui Impact out of our Rosa Erica V33 of Penguin cow, a Feb 2004-bron cow by Shadwell Emperor out of a HF Richochet 99F daughter who will be shown with her heifer calf at foot by Muirhall Total Deal and then two yearling bulls by Total Deal again. We look forward to seeing as many of you at the shows as possible.
January 2010: Shadwell welcomes new stockman Robert Clarke
For the past 20 years Robert Clarke has had a successful working association with pedigree Herefords, initially with the Badlingham herd and then incorporating both the Hermitage and Hillrow herds. During this time, success in the ring has been obtained at many shows including prestigious ones such as the Royal Show and the National Show at Tenbury.
Having gained respect within the Hereford Society, Robert says it has been an honour to be invited to judge at county shows as well as Society sales at Roscommon and Hereford.
Regarding taking up the post of stockman at Shadwell Robert says: “I am looking forward to the new challenge of working with the Shadwell herd and want to continue to use the best genetics available to successfully compete against the top herds, while also keeping a focus on what the commercial market needs by breeding easy calving and easy fleshing cattle. I am looking forward to meeting experienced Aberdeen Angus breeders and striking up new acquaintances at summer shows.”
July 2009: Shadwell Pam G328 reserve champion at Royal Norfolk Show
It was a show that could have been destined for disaster as Shadwell’s stockman Tony Miller suffered a dislocated shoulder when out exercising cattle at the show, but fortunately haulier Mark Harrison stepped in to his shoes to show the cattle at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show.
All turned out well in the end as our two year old heifer Shadwell Pam G328 took the reserve championship under judge Robert Venner. Pam is by Lockerley Bruno C270 and out of Shadwell Pam Z019 and narrowly missed out on the champion top spot behind Alex McLaren’s senior bull – congratulations to the McLaren family.
Also in our show team was our two year old bull Shadwell Elfin G332 who is by our senior stock bull Muirhall Total Deal E009 and out of Shadwell Elf E204, he stood second behind the McLaren’s bull. Our yearling bull Shadwell Black Borodin also stood third in a tough class. He is also by Total Deal and is out of Shadwell Blackbird D173.
We now have a break in the show season and will be out with a larger team at Edenbridge and Oxted Show before heading to Newbury for the Aberdeen-Angus National Show in September.
June 2009: Shadwell Elfin wins native interbreed championship at Suffolk Show
Our first show of the season proved to be an incredible result for us as 21 month old Shadwell Elfin G332 took the Aberdeen-Angus championship as well as going one better by taking the native interbreed championship.
It’s always good to win with a homebred animal, but to hear from the interbreed judge and fellow Angus breeder Euan Brewis, Eastfield, that Elfin is “a tremendous young bull with great muscle and movement – a credit to the breed” was particularly pleased.
Elfin is by our senior stock bull Muirhall Total Deal E009 and out of Shadwell Elf E204, a dam that has a tremendous pedigree, including Justin Eric X47 of Blelack, Royal Added Value 19d and Blackbird T22 of Blelack.
Also in the show team was a yearling bull Shadwell Black Borodin H349, a February 08 bull by Muirhall Total Deal E009 out of Shadwell Blackbird D173, who stood second and a two year old heifer Shadwell Pam G328, who is by Lockerley Bruno C270 out of Shadwell Pam Z019, who has both Dalrene Cruz and TLA Northern Samurai in her pedigree.
Our next show will be the Royal Norfolk Show in the beginning of July.
March 2009: All set for a busy summer show season
We’re gearing up for this year’s show season and after much consideration have selected this year’s team. Last year was a pretty miserable year in terms of showing with bluetongue movement restrictions meaning we didn’t show at all. This year we plan to take a yearling heifer, two two-year old heifers, an intermediate bull and possibly a cow and calf to Suffolk, South of England, Norfolk, Edenbridge and Oxted and Newbury. We look forward to catching up with other breeders at these shows and hopefully will be able to report back with great success.
March 2009: Shadwell Red Jay Eric F259 heads to Dumfries
We’d like to wish Mrs McKaine of Dumfries the best of luck with her first purchase from Shadwell. Heading to Scotland with her will be Shadwell Red Jay Eric F259, by Lockerely Bruno out of Jayne Erica W48 of Blelack. Aged 3 years and 2 months old, this bull is incredibly well fleshed with immense muscle and length. He has been used successfully on a few red Shadwell cows and will no doubt produce strong calves for Mrs. McKeine. She also bought one of our older red cows Shadwell Red Frances.
February 2009: Total Deal son heads to Wiltshire
Another Total Deal son leaves Shadwell and heads to Wiltshire. Shadwell Eagle G333 out of Shadwell Eyre E224 has sold in a private deal to Howard Smith, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Eagle had been entered for the February Perth Bull Sales, but was sold shortly before to run with 40 pedigree cows and 40 commercial cows. We wish Mr Smith every success with his purchase and look forward to regular sales in the future.
February 2009: Balmachie Brigadier G044 joins Shadwell as new herd sire
Shadwell Estates are delighted to announce the arrival of new herd sire Balmachie Brigadier G044. Bred in Messrs J F Lascelles successful herd at Carnoustie, Angus, we bought Brigadier for £16,000 in a private deal back in November. Sired by Cudlobe Yellowstone out of Netherton Belle C219, he was bought for his depth of pedigree, power and fleshing ability. He also has a fantastic set of legs and feet on him and will hopefully compliment Total Deal sired females. We are incredibly excited to see how he works in the herd and may even show him at the Aberdeen-Angus official show at Newbury in September this year.
